ANGO

The word ango means peaceful dwelling. It is an intensive practice period offered to Zen practitioners for deeper commitment to practice and study, based on the annual summer angos of the original monastic community that formed around the Buddha. For a lay community such as ours, when practitioners must continue living in the world, ango offers particular challenge.

Our ango period covers 6 weeks and takes place from the beginning of October through to December 8, Rohatsu, when we celebrate the enlightenment of the Buddha but is in no way mandatory. Those who wish to participate formally, but privately, sign on for various ways they can deepen their practice in zazen, dharma study and Zen-in-life practice. The 5 study evenings, led by one of our two teachers with a senior student assisting, are held on Thursdays (no study on Thanksgiving Day)and are devoted to exploring a Zen text or sutra. Dharma talks during ango are focused on some aspect of the ango undertaking. Ango closes with the celebration of Rohatsu.

The dates and study selection of the annual fall ango are announced each September.
