Feb. 29th Book Launch at the Rubin Museum of Art
The beautiful and spacious café at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City was the setting for Still Mind Zendo’s book launch party & reading honoring the release of two books by our teachers. More than 40 people gathered there on the evening of Feb. 29th, a number of them sangha members, to hear Sensei Janet and Sensei Gregory read from their books and answer questions.
Sensei Gregory read 10 poems from his collection of 75 entitled Never Something Else: Poems from the Eye of Zen. After each poem, cellist Anthime Miller played a brief musical interlude inspired by the poem. Sensei Janet read excerpts from Making Zen Your Own: Giving Life to 12 Key Golden Age Ancestors, her book that brings to life the stories of formative Chinese Zen masters. She shared anecdotes from the lives of Bodhidharma, Deshan, and Zhaozhou. Afterwards, the teachers answered questions from the audience on topics ranging from haiku and nature poetry to the role that China played in Zen history.
Special thanks to the Rubin Museum, SMZ’s neighbor on West 17th St., for hosting the event. Both books may be purchased at the zendo; additionally, Making Zen Your Own is available on Amazon.com, and Never Something Else is available for sale on the SMZ website.
